How To Calculate The Number Of Blocks Required For 2-Bedroom Apartments

How do you calculate the number of blocks required for 2-bedroom apartments using the area method?

It is good for a builder to know the estimate of materials needed for your building in order to plan accordingly. It will help you avoid being cheated by workers and also avoid wastage.

There are various ways to calculate the number of blocks required, however, the area method of calculation is mostly preferred and used because it’s easy and not as stressful as other methods.

In this article, we will be explaining the best ways to calculate the number of blocks required for 2-bedroom apartments using the area method.

How to Calculate the Number of Blocks Required for 2-Bedroom Apartments Using the Area Method

How do we calculate the number of blocks required for 2-bedroom apartments using the area method?

We will be looking at a 2-bedroom flat with a total length of 72000mm. Its height from foundation to rooftop is 1300mm +3000mm which equals 4300mm.

Thus the surface area is 72000X 4300 = 309,600,000 mm, but in metres, it is 309.6m2.

Next, we remove the surface areas of windows and doors. For this building, the window’s height is 1.2m and they are in 10 places.

Area of one of the windows

The area of one window is 1.3m X 1.3m = 1.69m2

Thus to calculate the total area, we have to multiply the area of one window by the total number of windows in the building.

Therefore; 1.69m2 (area of one window) X 10 (total number of windows) = 16.9m2

These are for the big windows, we also have to calculate the sizes of the smaller windows in the building and add to the total area of the building.

In this building, we have 2 (600X 600mm) windows in the kitchen and toilet.

Thus, the area of each is 0.6X0.6= 0.36. The total area of the windows is 0.36 + 0.36 = 0.72m2

This is then added to the area of the big windows= 16.9 + 0.72= 17.62m2

Total area of the door

For doors, the height is 2m whilst the width is 0.9m with a total of 7 doors in the building.

The area of one door is 2 X 0.9 = 1.8m2

Since we have 7 doors we multiply the area of one door by the total number of doors in the flat to get the total surface area: 1.8 X 7= 12.6m2

Total areas for doors and windows = 17.62 m2 + 12.6 m2= 30.22 m2.

Then we deduct the total area of doors and windows from the total area of the building;

309.6m2 – 30.22m2 = 279.38 m2.

With the total surface area of the building known, we can now calculate the surface area of one block.

The surface area of one block

The length of the block to be used is 0.45m and the height  is 0.225

Area Of Block = 0.225 x 0.45 = 0.10125m2

Therefore the total blocks required would be :

279.38 m2 / 0.10125m2 = 2759 blocks.

Lastly, we have to remove 16% for the bonding space; thus 0.16 X 2759 = 441 blocks

2759- 441 blocks = 2318 blocks.

Note that, this is just an estimate and not the total number of blocks to be used as the mortar space as well as damaged blocks were not considered. Also, see how to calculate the number of blocks for a 3-bedroom apartment using te same method.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do you calculate how many blocks you need for the construction of your apartment?

Calculate the area of a block by multiplying its height and width. Divide your wall area by the block area. The result is the total amount of blocks you need.

2. How many blocks does a two-bedroom house require?

A 2-bedroom house requires between 120 and 130 bags of cement and between 2,000 and 2,500 blocks on average.

3. How many bags of cement can build a 2-bedroom flat in Nigeria?

For a 2-bedroom flat, you’ll need 16 bags of cement along with 120 tonnes of sharp sand and red sand, depending on your required width and length. However, this is a general figure.
